Cancelling runs through several screens that list what you would lose and offer to remind you later or keep the benefits — the actual confirmation is the last one. Nothing is cancelled until you reach it. If you have not used any Prime benefits this term you may be owed a refund, but it is not offered automatically.
Cancelled and still charged?
Then the charge is not coming from Amazon Prime. Whoever took your money holds the subscription — if you subscribed inside an app, it is the app store, and only the app store can stop it.
